Pelion is a mountain of Thessaly. It belongs to the county of Magnesia and rests close to the city of Volos. Pelion is a very smooth mountain with close proximity to the sea, a natural border between Greek mainland and the Mediterranean sea, which makes it unique. The highest peak is “Pouritanos Stavros” with an altitude of 1.624m. According to the Greek mythology, the summit of the mountain was the home of Zeus the Acreos, and the entire territory of the mountain was inhabited by Centaurs , half-horse half human beings. One of them called Cheiron a very just and honest Centaur, had the ability to heal people using herbs collected from the magnificent slopes and was teacher of Jason, Achilles, Asklipios and many others ancient Greek heroes. The beauties of Pelion have been praised by many writers in ancient history and it was known not only for its thick green forest, but was also known as the “Medicinal mountain” since it was full of medicinal herbs and plants. Nowadays the soft slopes, the easily accessed peaks, the dense forests, the heavenly beaches around it and the traditional villages makes Pelion a popular destination all year round.
